Family Class Immigration

Family class immigration allows Canadian citizens and permanent residents to sponsor close relatives to immigrate to Canada. Canada places a strong emphasis on family reunification, and this stream offers a meaningful pathway for families to be together in Canada.

Who Can Be Sponsored?

Canadian citizens and permanent residents can sponsor certain family members for permanent residence in Canada. Eligible relatives include:

• Spouse, common-law partner, or conjugal partner
• Dependent children (including adopted children)
• Parents and grandparents
• Orphaned relatives under 18 (siblings, nephews, nieces, grandchildren)
• Any other relative if you have no other eligible relative

Spousal and Partner Sponsorship

Spousal and partner sponsorship is one of the most common family class applications. Sponsors must meet income requirements and sign an undertaking to support their sponsored spouse or partner for three years from the date they become a permanent resident.

• Inland sponsorship (if spouse is already in Canada)
• Outland sponsorship (if spouse is outside Canada)
• Open work permit available during processing

Parents and Grandparents Program (PGP)

The Parents and Grandparents Program allows Canadian citizens and permanent residents to sponsor their parents and grandparents for permanent residence. Applications are accepted through an interest-to-sponsor form process.

• Minimum income requirements apply
• Super Visa available as an alternative for longer stays
• Undertaking to support for 20 years required

Sponsor Requirements

To be eligible to sponsor a family member, you must be at least 18 years old, a Canadian citizen or permanent resident, able to provide for the basic needs of your sponsored relative, and not receiving social assistance (unless for a disability).
